In the grand scheme of things, I think it's time we looked at Duke Nukem without the veil of geeky romanticism or nostalgia. While fun, obnoxious and slightly revolutionary for the waning days of the 486, what did Duke Nukem bring to the table ? Yes, we all got to indulge our inner bastard that chomped cigars, womanized, dispensed one liners like a Tourette's Syndrome teenager on meth and of course, blowing shit up. Hooray. But what can Duke Nukem offer today that isn't already done by another game ? Pixel based shooters like Wolfenstien, Quake and Duke Nukem may be fun for reliving the glory days of 9600 baud modems (remember initialization scripts? ADTD, anyone?), but as a gamer, I'm pretty content with the current field of franchises out there; especially Battlefield and Team Fortress 2.
